COVID got you feeling anxious? How about riots, race relations, bad weather, the 2020 elections, kids going to college, or any of the million other things that can make us feel worried about our future, or anxious about where our lives are going? I can relate. The past six months have given us numerous opportunities to place our trust in God. As I was browsing my Twitter feed, I came across this tweet by Tommy Tighe
I think many people fall into this sort of cycle, and it’s natural to feel abandoned when things don’t turn out the way we want or when we face hardship. Tommy has a more interesting point here though: how do we break out of the cycle?
I don’t have any easy answers, but I will say that trust in God is something my family has been working on ever since the pandemic started. My wife and I could physically see the stress and anxiety in my young son’s shoulders as we talked about closings, the number of cases and deaths reported, and all the other ways that the pandemic has affected our lives. My wife and I prayed on this, and come up with the idea that we should start a litany of prayer in our family focused on the area of trust. We found the famous Litany of Trust by the Sisters of Life, and it’s fantastic. However, it’s not ideal for families who want to pray this together.
Thus, the Litany of Trust for Families was born.
We prayed this Litany for nine days, and continue to pray it to this day. It has made a profound impact on our daily lives. More than anything, repeating the words “Jesus, I trust in you” helps us to look to Heaven whenever we hear, see, or experience something that seems to be beyond our understanding. I’m not going to say the Litany will work miracles in your life, but for us, we have come to a new sense of peace about trying to understand the mind of God, and more importantly, about how to give up our struggles, decisions, and daily conflicts to his will.
